PE

At South Wilford, we love sport and offer a wide range of activities from tag rugby, cricket and football, to trampolines, potted sports and the classic sports day races! EVERYONE at South Wilford has been able to access a range of sports and have fun too.

We were also really lucky to be visited by another top athlete, David Clarke, a former GB and Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey Player. David told us all about his journey into Ice Hockey, his achievements and where it took him. Some of the children were even lucky enough to try on all his hockey gear. The children really enjoyed it and I know some of them were inspired to have a go at Ice Hockey themselves - watch out David, they're coming for your record! We have also been visited by local Winter Olympic Ice skaters.

We were extremely lucky to be visited by Olympian and DOUBLE Commonwealth Medalist Jemima Yeats-Brown earlier this term. Jemima is part of the British Judo team and has represented Britain on many occasions.

Jemima ran a sponsored fitness circuit for the whole school and we all had the best time challenging ourselves and having fun. We also got to learn about her inspiring journey into Judo and her important life motto "If you get knocked down, you get right back up again - Some children were lucky enough to get to have a go at throwing Jemima down Judo-style too!

Intent

At South Wilford we want our pupils to have the opportunity to take part in and explore a variety of sports whilst promoting enjoyment of physical activity and intern boost their mental health positively. By developing each child’s skill, knowledge and understanding of sports, they will know how to use their bodies effectively and maintain high levels of physical fitness. We want to embed values such as fairness, respect and sportsmanship and ensure each child has the opportunity to compete across a variety of both mixed and gender specific sports both in and out of school.

Implementation

We follow the Derby Schools PE scheme and combine this with PE delivered by specialist Sports coaches from Junior Jam.

Skills and knowledge progression can be seen throughout and Enjoyment of physical activity is a key strand running through the PE lessons and is an important element to allow for targeted progress and development.

We take part in the Girls Football league and the mixed football league, as well as participating in other inter school and inter Trust sporting events such as the mini athletics event aimed at children that engage in sporting activities less frequently. We have a rich and long history of basketball with close links to Jimmy Jumpshot and the mini basketball league.

We provide a wide range of after school clubs and lunchtime clubs through our links with SH Sports and Rattle n Roll.
